Parks Service Coordinator

Parks Maintainer – Turf/Irrigation

City of Waterloo - Waterloo, ON

Reporting to the Supervisor, Turf and Sports IPM, your primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Perform a wide range of administrative, maintenance and operational activities related to Turf/Irrigation
  • Plan and organize materials, supplies, and equipment to carry out daily job assignment
  • Troubleshoot all irrigation systems and equipment
  • Repair all irrigations systems , set up watering programs according to needs of turf and user programs
  • Coordinate work with Lead Hand – Parks Operations
  • Monitor and evaluate systems, keep accurate records of water usage
  • Maintain, operate, troubleshoot, read plans, and repair complex irrigation systems comprised of booster pumps, computer software, computer controlled and manual field satellites, zone and control valves, electric sprinkler heads, in ground piping, filtration systems, and multi-zone stations
  • Perform various vegetation control duties, cultural practices and turf renovations in parks
  • Identify and provide recommendations to supervisor for all supplementary work required to maintain various turfgrass areas (e.g., turf renovation, maintenance regiment based on target turf composition, irrigation)
  • Independently monitor and assess turf conditions and identify maintenance requirements based on understanding of target turf composition and associated maintenance practices, biodiversity, irrigation system and integrated pest management (e.g., insects, disease, nutrient requirements, drainage, wear patterns, etc.)
  • Meet with contractors as required and provide appropriate record keeping for but not limited to: field studies, project planning and performed field work 
  • Safely operate various types of vehicles and equipment(e.g., top dressers, overseeders, loader tractors and implements, mowers, etc.) as required
  • Provide frontline customer service to the public and special interests groups
  • Maintain a safe work environment by taking necessary precautions and applying safety procedures in accordance with health and safety legislation and City of Waterloo policies
  • Communicate and cooperate effectively with others respecting the core values of the Corporation, both internally and externally
  • Provide occasional functional guidance to staff on operational activities, equipment, and health and safety related procedures within area of expertise
  • Participate in various teams and initiatives 
  • Participate in winter control operations

Trees, Trails and Horticulture Superintendent

As a key member of the Parks Operations team, you will assist in all aspects of parks operations. The Trees, Trails and Horticulture Superintendent will supervise and manage staff and participate in operational planning. You will lead and assess the work of others, ensure that work is within established guidelines and liaise with other agencies, developers, consultants and the general public. You will draft specifications, terms of reference, safe work procedures, maintenance and contract documents. Foreperson, Afterhours

Reporting to the Supervisor, Parks Maintenance, this position is responsible for overseeing and coordinating after-hours parks maintenance and field recreation through Corporate, Departmental and Divisional standard operating procedures. This includes ensuring that the most efficient use of staff, contract services, equipment and materials is achieved within the Division. The role will be responsible for supporting special events, Field Recreation maintenance teams, and responding to after-hours (evening and weekends) concerns within the Parks Maintenance and Forestry division. Assist with preparing annual operating budgets, and establishing and prioritizing capital projects for Parks Maintenance and Forestry.  Provides advice and guidance to staff.

  • Supervise teams, ensuring proper coverage and efficient work allocation.
  • Work evenings and weekends to provide timely follow up on all Parks Operations and Forestry related concerns.
  • Oversee and inspect all functions performed by crew members after hours and on weekends.
  • Works with various parks management teams to coordinate after hour staffing requirements.
  • Inspect all work areas including parkland, buildings, structures, and equipment to ensure productivity, proper operation, cleanliness, and safety.
  • Perform call outs to support after hours events and Parks Maintenance and Forestry concerns.
  • Provide the highest level of customer service with prompt response to concerns from residents, Corporate Leadership Team and Members of Council.
  • Inspects/supervises work performed by crew members and contractors; ensures quantity, quality, and consistency of work along with ensuring the safe/efficient use of equipment, tools, and materials.
  • Manage Field Recreation and Special Event staff during after-hours periods (evenings and weekends).
  • Liaise with event organizers and sports field user groups.
  • Provide on-site supervision and support to staff working events to address issues or emergencies that arise.
  • Monitor compliance of the Municipal Alcohol Policy.
  • Conduct post event evaluations and gather feedback to improve future event management.
  • Trains, directs, and monitors staff to perform work safely and efficiently.
  • Oversees winter maintenance activities.
  • Performs on-call and other duties, as and when required.

Reporting to the Supervisor, Parks Maintenance, this position leads and directs a designated geographical work area consisting of seasonal and unionized full time staff.  Provides advice and guidance to staff.

Turf Technician

Under general supervision, the Turf Technician performs tasks related to the maintenance, operation and construction of parks and municipal assets. Using technical and educational experience, the work involves interacting with field and supervisory staff, including internal and external stakeholders, to develop and implement programs relating to turf management. Technical skills are required to provide expertise and input to short and long-term work plans, contract administration, development agreements, capital plans, progress reports, and research findings with consequent recommendations. The incumbent will conduct physical tasks including the use of hand and power tools, motor vehicles, and other equipment when required.
