Celebrated 30 years in 2017!

Sports Turf Canada was established in 1987 at a meeting held at the University of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario to address the need to minimize and avoid turf-related injury on athletic fields.

With considerable assistance from the Ontario Ministries of Tourism & Recreation and Agriculture & Food, a constitution and administrative structure was established and the Association held its first Board of Directors meeting on May 27 of the same year. Our first annual field day was introduced and the first issue of the Sports Turf Newsletter, later renamed the Sports Turf Manager, published.

In 1998 a marketing strategy was developed to expand the membership and solidify the plans for the Association's future. An educational conference was presented; both the conference and field day have been held successfully every year since they began.

Our first Executive Secretary was engaged in 1990 and 1991 saw the production of a series of three videotapes on turf management in cooperation with the University of Guelph, as well as publication of An Athletic Field Managers' Guide for Construction and Maintenance. Our Scholarship program was established in 1993.

We moved to an office at the Guelph Turfgrass Institute in 1994, which remains our home today. Our virtual presence, with email, was established too. We embarked on a logo design campaign with graphic design students at Conestoga College in Kitchener, Ontario and in 1997 published Constructing the Sports Field. Understanding Turf Management followed in 2000, and the Athletic Field Construction Manual in 2008.

The Michael J. Bladon Link to the Michigan State University Turfgrass Information File was established in 2008 and the digitization of the magazine archives was completed the following year.

Sports Turf Canada (formally the Sports Turf Association) was recognized by the Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) as its first International Affiliate Organization in 2009 followed by the development of a strategic partnership with the Western Canada Turfgrass Association three years later.

In 2014 the formal nationwide association was launched and as a result, the name changed to Sports Turf Canada.

More than a quarter-century since that inaugural meeting, Sports Turf Canada continues to passionately promote better, safer sports turf through our partnerships, our innovative approach and through our professional educational programs across Canada.
